Birch Bay Village is a member of the Mount Desert Island Hospital Organization, a non-profit healthcare organization serving MDI and surrounding communities through a 25-bed critical access facility in Bar Harbor and a network of area health centers — all designed to provide comprehensive healthcare for residents and visitors.
Located a short distance from Birch Bay Village, Mount Desert Island Hospital offers award-winning inpatient and outpatient services and 24-hour emergency care.
The hospital was established more than 100 years ago by both year-round and summer residents committed to improving the health of our unique island community. Birch Bay Village was founded in 2001 to complement this historically strong commitment to the health and welfare of the MDI community.
Today, the organization employs more than 500 people and is the second largest employer on Mount Desert Island. In addition to the hospital’s main campus in downtown Bar Harbor, the organization is home to eight regional health centers, including a full-service behavioral health center and dental clinic. Active medical staff includes hospitalists, primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, psychiatrists, a board-certified emergency physician, an ophthalmologist, a pathologist, a radiologist, a dentist, a palliative care physician, and a urologist.
The MDI Hospital Organization has also established a wide range of educational partnerships that improve quality of care and provide a variety of learning opportunities for students and clinical staff. The hospital’s groundbreaking teaching partnership with Penn Medicine, founded in 2011, has evolved into a model for future urban-rural partnerships across the nation, establishing MDI Hospital as a premier rural hospital for emergency medicine and critical care.
Each year, MDI Hospital’s Tufts program and College of the Atlantic (COA) internship invite talented students to experience rural medicine first-hand under the guidance of the organization’s excellent clinicians. The hospital also partners with Husson University, the University of New England, and Regis University to bring select pharmacy students to its campus, and its MDI High School Affiliates Program gives ambitious high school seniors the opportunity to gain experience in the medical field while earning credit hours.
MDI Hospital is widely recognized for excellence, quality, and patient satisfaction, which led the organization to earn a four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2017. The hospital’s inpatient, outpatient, and emergency and surgical care services have also been consistently acknowledged by Avatar International, the Leapfrog Group, the National Rural Health Association, Harvard Pilgrim and Healthgrades.
